Yard Sale

The community yard sale was a success, though not all that resounding. For example, I had over $200 in tagged items for sale and made $37. Of course my neighbors benefited from this as I spent about 14 of those dollars at their sales. Our little street was a tight fit for some of the big pickups full of people who came to browse and buy. Most of our buyers were Mexican people from Sonora. Apparently some of them come up to US yard sales and take their hauls south of the border and resell at tremendous profit down there (US goods are hot commodities in Mexico). The fun part of the sale was talking with people, both buyers and neighbors.

I also sold a pair of obscure Pioneer CD changer cassettes to a fellow who was stunned to find them; they will fit in his CD changer in his car apparently. I gave a little girl a golf ball for free; she was so excited she nearly tripped over a red plastic gas can in my driveway. Another guy thanked me for the two ink cartridges I gave him and his wife a deal on; he told me he hadn't wanted to go with his wife to yard sales but ours was the first one they went to that day and, as he put it, it was "spot on, man! Thank you!"

Then there was the scruffy looking fellow ("Sunlight's hard on them electronics idinit?") who bought my outdoor thermometer for 50 cents. He reached in his pocket and pulled out 17 cents and said "Oh, looks like you're out of luck!....wait, I got some change in my truck." So he shuffled (he was wearing sandals that should have been strapped on his ankle but weren't so he was heel-on-strapping it around my driveway) to his pickup then returned and handed my 50 cents. However, the 2 quarters were stuck together so I thought he had given me some sort of slug but it turned out to be 2 real quarters. He smiled and said, "Tripped you out, didn't it!" Then he hopped in his truck and headed out. I'm not sure he had his act together, but his quarters sure were.
